Purpose
This Malaysian Standard specifies safety and performance requirements for public outdoor playground equipment designed for 5th percentile of a 2-year-old to the 95th percentile of a 12-year-old to reduce life-threatening and debilitating injuries. It excludes residential play equipment, toys, amusement rides, sports or fitness equipment for users over 12, specialized equipment for infants aged 6 to 24 months, soft contained play structures, and site furnishings outside the use zone (such as benches and shade structures).

Slide guard (8.5.9.2) should NOT be lowered to 1524mm under MS. It should follow ASTM requirement at 2130mm. 1524mm would still be easily accessible for older children (1.5m height) with their hand extended upwards to pull themselves up.

Sliding poles (8.4) should not be recommended for younger age group, as specified under Playground Safety Handbook by CPSC (Consumer Product Safety Commission), which is used by the CPSI when evaluating playground. To put it into the standard will help remove the ambiguity under MS966, which only follows ASTM 1487, but not the CPSC.

4.1.1 A minimal durability period should be stated. Such as 15 years for outdoor equipment with plastic, 20 years for steel and 10 years for timber. Indoor equipment with padding cover should be durable for at least 5 years.
13.1 The manufacturer should make available spare part for proper maintenance.
