The objective of the Biosafety Act 2007 is to protect human, plant, and animal health, as well as the environment and biological diversity.
Pursuant to the Biosafety Act 2007, the National Biosafety Board (NBB) is currently evaluating an application submitted by Zen Cropscience Sdn. Bhd. for approval to release genetically modified (GM) rice, Oryza sativa L. variety MR219, for the purpose of conducting a confined field trial. The trial is intended to evaluate the GM rice with respect to its agronomic traits, glyphosate resistance, transgene flow, and transgene stability under contained field conditions.
In making its decision on the application, the NBB invites members of the public to submit comments and/or queries regarding the proposed release. Prior to submitting any comments or queries, interested parties are encouraged to review the fact sheet provided. The NBB welcomes comments and queries concerning any potential impacts or risks to human and animal health, as well as to the environment, that may arise from the proposed release.
Comments and queries should be prepared carefully, as they will be subject to the same level of scrutiny as the application under consideration by the NBB. Submissions should be relevant and contribute meaningfully to the NBBâs assessment of the application.
While science-based submissions are encouraged, comments that focus on cultural, ethical, social, or other values are also welcome. Such submissions should, however, be presented as well-reasoned and well-founded arguments.

Strongly against gmo agriculture in Malaysia and Malaysia should be GMO free. If worldwide consumers know Malaysia adopt gmo, they may think Malaysia food will be polluted and stop the import.

The proposed confined field trial of glyphosate-tolerant GM MR219 rice poses critical agronomic, legal, and environmental risks that warrant strict reconsideration by the National Biosafety Board.
Drawing directly from Malaysia's experience with Clearfield rice, single-herbicide tolerance traits carry a severe risk of creating glyphosate-resistant weedy rice (padi angin) through selection pressure and gene flow.
Furthermore, while the trial proposes physical netted structures, Malaysia's interconnected lowland paddy irrigation networks remain highly vulnerable to water-borne pollen or genetic material escaping during heavy tropical rainfall.
Crucially, the Biosafety Act 2007 currently lacks a statutory liability and redress framework to compensate neighboring smallholders for economic losses caused by accidental cross-pollination. Without a mandatory Socio-Economic Impact Assessment under Section 35 and rigorous, audited water-containment protocols, this trial exposes smallholders to unmitigated financial, ecological, and agronomic risks. How will this trial benefit the local community, especially food security, farmers' livelihoods, and human health?

Must stop immediately playing with fire. The authority must be honest to themselves and rakyat and humanity, they don't have confidence in avoiding mishap bringing In and propagating GMO. All the authority is doing are just parching possible risks which are seeable , but do not know what to do with unseeable risks.It is basically telling being they are doing their best to avoid problems with GMO but this very best they do is meaningless because when the danger arise the authority has no capacity to reverse. At that time holding anybody for accountability will be meaningless as the danger of GMO cannot be reversed at all. It's just like releasing hares into Australia in the past.
The authority must not approve anything especially GMO living begins into Malaysia knowing they absolutely have no capacity to contain the risk. Once they are in the environment , GMO is out of control, let's be honest to ourselves on this point.
Do we truly need GMO rice or any GMO crops? There are so many other avenues to improve quality and volume of crops through Agri practice and soil improvement etc.
Again authority has to be truly honest to themselves ,is this just a KPI to fulfill or there is true need of GMO? Is this just because of WTO obligation or we have real issues living without GMO crops?Â
The risks of GMO is unlimited and irreversible, it's not justified for any little limited benefit of GMO may bring.

â Membangunkan benih berkualiti tinggi, termasuk varieti bukan GMO
â Mengurangkan kehilangan selepas tuaian dan memperkukuh rantaian bekalan
Risiko ujian GMO padi:
