This document deals with the safety ofelectrical appliances for household andsimilar purposes, their rated voltage beingnot more than 250 V for single-phaseappliances and 480 V for other appliancesincluding direct current (DC) suppliedappliances and battery operated appliances.
Appliances not intended for normalhousehold use but which nevertheless maybe a source of danger to the public, such as appliances intended to be used by laymenin shops, in light industry and on farms, are within the scopeof this standard.
This standard deals with the reasonablyforeseeable hazards presented byappliances that are encountered by allpersons. However, in general, it does not take into account:
â persons (including children) whose
âĸ physical, sensory or mental capabilities; or
âĸ lack of experience and knowledge
prevents them from using the appliancesafely without supervision or instruction;
â children playing with the appliance.
Additional requirements may be necessaryfor appliances intended to be used invehicles or on board ships or aircraft. Inmany countries, additional requirements arespecified by the national health authorities, the national authoritiesresponsible for the protection of labour, thenational water supply authorities and similarauthorities.
