Purpose

Greetings,

The Malaysian Herbal Monograph (MHM) Committee is currently developing a new pharmacopoeia document titled "Eurycoma longifolia (Tongkat Ali) Root (Draft for soliciting opinions)". This document serve as the definitive reference for the quality control, regulatory compliance, and registration of natural products both in Malaysia and for international trade.

Our goal is to ensure that local herbal standards are scientifically rigorous, commercially feasible, and harmonized with international quality requirements. Therefore, feedback from industry stakeholders is crucial. Your input ensures that the specifications (from identification tests to limits for heavy metals and marker compounds) are practical for industry adoption while maintaining high safety and efficacy standards.

Therefore, you are cordially invited to participate in the review of the pharmacopoeial document which is accessible at the Unified Public Consultation (UPC) Portal as per the steps and the link described below:

Forum: Draft document of the Malaysian Herbal Pharmacopoeia for "Eurycoma longifolia (Tongkat Ali) Root".

Submission Guidelines (How to Comment):
1. Reference the section: When providing comments, please clearly state the relevant section title. You may comment directly in the UPC portal, comment on the PDF directly and re-upload it, or submit your comments in an uploaded Word document.

2. Technical comments: Any feedback on technical specifications (e.g., assay limits, HPLC methods) should include scientific justification, supporting laboratory data, or relevant references.

3. Upon completing your review of the draft documents, please complete the feedback link (Google form) below to provide your agency/company details and a summary of your feedback, and indicate your agreement or disagreement with the document.

Pharmacopoeial standards for Tongkat Ali raw material are important, as they establish quality control at the starting point. However, it is equally important to develop a pharmacopoeial standard for standardized Tongkat Ali extract, given its greater commercial relevance and demand. This would ensure consistent quality, safety, and efficacy of the extract used in finished products.

The draft provides a useful foundation for the Tongkat Ali and generally follows an appropriate pharmacopoeial structure. However, several scientific, analytical, technical and editorial issues should be addressed before the document is considered ready for final approval.

Detailed comments and recommended revisions are provided in the attached document. The authors are requested to carefully consider the comments and revise accordingly. Particular attention should be given to ensuring scientific accuracy, internal consistency and clarity of analytical procedures.

Overall, the document has good potential, but further revision and supporting clarification are required to strengthen its analytical suitability as an official pharmacopoeial monograph.
